The
first thing I want you to know is that I’ve been there.
…I know what it is like to feel unmotivated,
unhappy and unsatisfied with the shape of your body and to have no idea
where to begin to make it right.
…I know how frustrating it is to watch others
making progress while you struggle just to lose a pound.
…I know how exasperating it is to work hard,
starve yourself and say “no” to the things you love, only to find that
nothing seems to give you the results you’re looking for.
… I know how maddening it is to lose weight
only to gain it right back, plus more, once you go back to your usual
lifestyle.
… I know the terrible disappointment of seeing
all your hopes fade into oblivion when the slightest thing goes wrong.
… I know how gut-wrenching it is to think that
it is too late to make real change or that, no matter how hard you try,
nothing will ever turn back the hands of time.
… I know what it’s like when concerned family members
and friends suggest that your weight problem is something you’ll just
need to learn to live with.
I know what it’s like to feel this way – because
that’s exactly how I felt the majority of my life. That’s why, when I
finally discovered the secret to changing my body, my health, and my
life, I knew it was something I could not keep to myself.
It’s
the reason that, 11 years ago, I left my corporate job, cushy office,
401K, benefits and all, to become a full-time trainer and coach.
What I
wanted more than anything was to create an easy to follow, step-by-step
system that people could use to become their healthiest, leanest and
happiest - a program that would yield the best results possible without
forcing you to spend long hours in the gym, give up your lifestyle, your
friends, or the foods you love.
I
wanted a program that would help people who couldn’t bear the thought of
taking that first step into the gym, but I also wanted it to help all
the people I saw spending half their lives working out and starving themselves, with little or nothing to show for it.
I
wanted to create a simple solution – a way to get into
great shape and STAY THERE. To do that, I knew it had to be livable,
it had to be enjoyable, and it had to be a proven program
that could be followed for life.
But,
I’m getting ahead of myself...
Before we go any further, it’s important to tell you
the story of how this program came about...
Turn the clocks back to 1992.
After the birth of my second child, Alex, I came out of the delivery room heavier than I’d ever been in my life: 198 pounds.
I was devastated because the only way I had ever managed to lose weight in the past was
by following an extremely low fat, low calorie, low everything diet. The prospect of starving
myself sent me into a panic.
How was I ever going to get all this weight off?
And what
if I still looked terrible once I finished?
What if it wouldn't come off? What then?
I spent the next 12
months watching every bite I ate, counting every ounce of fat, every gram of carbohydrates, every calorie.
I survived on a regimen of
diet soda, coffee, and carrot sticks.
I worked out constantly, running miles on
the treadmill, despite the fact that my knees where shot. In the end, I looked better,
I suppose… in my clothes… but, in a swim suit? No way...
True to
form, the weight slowly crept back and, by 1998, I was edging back to
my post pregnancy weight of 200 lbs. When the scale hit 189, that was it… I
was finished feeling frumpy. I hated everything about my body.
Stepping on the scale one morning launched me into another desperate
attempt to get back into my “skinny jeans” and I spent the next five
months trying, once again, to force my body into compliance.
At one point I was spending a good 8 hours a week in the gym (running on the
treadmill, biking for hours, attending group fitness classes) and eating
very little food and managed to lose 27 pounds.
Then… suddenly, no matter how hard I worked, no matter
how few calories I ate, the scale refused to move…
Little
did I know that in my attempt to squeeze off the fat with lots and lots
of cardio, and starve off the flab with as few calories as I could
tolerate, I was squeezing and starving off a good deal of my lean muscle
mass in the process. Five months earlier, before I began this crazy
roller coaster ride to get skinny again, my body fat had tested out at
28%. Five months and 27 pounds later, my body fat was 31.8% – nearly 4%
HIGHER! How was this possible? I couldn’t imagine what in the world
could be happening to my body. Was it age? Was it my metabolism?
Then, I
got my answer. The young man performing the body fat test explained to
me that much of what I had lost on the scale was water and lean muscle, not
body fat. This was due, he said, to a lack of calories, a lack of
strength training and a lack of knowledge. He explained that in the
process of working my body to death, I systematically gave it no choice
but to shift into “survival mode.” All those months of hard work had
actually forced my body to keep the fat and lose the
easier-to-break-down muscle. It was a lesson I never forgot.
After all of my efforts to get “in shape,” starving
and exercising harder than I’d ever exercised in my life, I finally
understood that in order to change my body, I had to change my approach.
I
decided right then and there I was going to find the solution. A few
months later, I discovered a program that incorporated all of the
elements I knew had to be present in order to truly reshape my body:
proper nutrition, strength training, and short bouts of interval cardio.

Within
12 Weeks I Was A Completely Different Person Inside And Out
Not
only did I really begin to change, this new way of working out
and eating helped me recapture all those long hours I had previously
spent in the gym doing way too much of the wrong stuff. I was absolutely
amazed that I could actually cut my gym time in half, eat constantly
and finally get the results I’d been dreaming of! I was able to go back
to my “real” life, reconnected with my friends and family and, best of
all, my confidence, my moods, everything about my life began to
soar.
Even
the way people noticed my weight loss changed. Before, when I was doing
it the “wrong” way, people would say things like, “Oh, you are
getting so skinny,” or “How did you get so thin?” Suddenly,
they were using words like, “fit, strong, and toned” to describe
what they were seeing.
Not
long after that, the manager of the gym approached me to compliment me
on my progress and asked if I would be willing to provide a picture and
testimonial for their up and coming “Wall of Fame.” At the end of our
conversation, she handed me a flyer about becoming a certified personal
trainer. I’ll never forget the shock I felt when she said, "We could really use someone like you as a fitness professional here
at the gym.”
I drove
home in a daze - how had this happened? How, in the course of nine
short weeks, did I go from being a soft, sad, 44 year old soccer mom to a
hard-body, happy, potential personal trainer? It was unbelievable
really but, admittedly, from that point on I could think of nothing
else.
After four
months of intensive studying and training, I earned my IFPA personal
trainer’s certification. Within three weeks of earning that first
certification, I was so heavily booked that I was faced with the
strangest and most wonderful decision of my life… turn my back on 32 new
clients or quit my job of seven years, leave the security of my salary,
my 401K and nice corner office and never look back. For me, the choice
was crystal clear.
“But
your clients barely even sweat!”
Fast forward six years to 2006. The
program responsible for spinning my life in a whole new direction had
became the
staple protocol in my personal
training business and I very quickly filled my portfolio to the brim
with amazing stories of transformation. I was never without a waiting
list and, while all of my clients were working less than anyone else in
the gym and getting amazing results, my fellow colleagues, some of whom
had been training for years, continued to shake their heads in doubt.
Year
after year, I’d hear the same comment… “Your clients hardly look like
they’re working… they don’t even sweat!” Still, I continued to
watch their clients dragging themselves out of the gym week after
week, soaked with sweat, barely able to walk, often injured, dreading
the thought of their next session, yet few if any of these folks every
changed. In fact, many of them got fatter!
In my 11 year career, working alongside
hundreds of trainers in a half-dozen locations, I met only two who
could produce even one picture of evidence that their training methods
worked. Although my portfolio was stuffed with success stories, most of
my fellow trainers continued to shake their heads in disbelief, despite
the glaring evidence that the no-pain, no-gain mentality doesn’t work
(either short term or long.) No one seemed to “get it.”


Even with the proof staring them right in
the face, no one seemed to grasp the truth; that less work, more
enjoyable work, actually worked better than the
harder-faster-heavier-longer method.
What I have discovered is that all the
old ideas of using diet, deprivation, and suffering as a means of
getting stronger and healthier are so deeply etched in minds of most
people (and in the minds of most trainers), that most everyone believes
that, unless it hurts, it can’t possibly work.
After training thousands of
men, women and young adults, here is what I have come to know as the
absolute truth: Pain and suffering are, at best, temporary solutions and
serve only to set the body up for rejection from day one!
So, if you’ve been working hard and getting nowhere…now you know why.
In fact, I am certain, beyond a shadow
of a doubt, that the entire “no pain – no gain” mentality is
singlehandedly responsible for the wide spread obesity problem we are
currently facing in today’s society. How else can you explain all the
craziness that goes on every day, in gyms all around the world, and all
the billions of dollars spent on diet aids, supplements and weight-loss
clinics. Yet, obesity and the myriad of health problems that accompany
it continue to spiral out of control.
But wait, the best news is still to come!
After years of training the “less is better” way, (the
majority of my clients worked out a total of 4 hours per week)
something amazing happened. Something that, to this day, still shocks
and amazes me!
At the
end of 2004, I was faced with a dilemma. With a few of my long standing
clients planning to return in January and an additional line-up of new
and current clients, plus a few folks sitting on a waiting list, I
suddenly found myself with too many clients and not enough training
hours in the week.
The
only solution was to move everyone from their usual three sessions per
week to twice a week, with the understanding that each client would commit to
doing their third strength training session and all of their
cardio on their own in order to continue to achieve the same great
results.
By the
end of March, we all realized something incredible. None of my clients
were getting their third strength training session in and many confessed
to being either too tired or too busy to fit it in as many cardio
sessions as they’d like. Despite this fact, all of these folks
were getting better results than ever! My long-standing clients were
suddenly breaking through plateaus and my new clients were getting
quicker, more noticeable drops in body fat than I’d ever witnessed
before.
How
could this be, we wondered? Was it possible that even less was
better? Certainly no one I had ever met, trainer nor client, had
ever been willing to test this “minimum” theory. It always appeared in
the past that the best way to get better results was to add more work.
Could it be that after all these years, the opposite was true? Was it possible that
we’ve all been working out far too hard and, in answer to that, the body
just refuses to acquiesce?

Three years later the proof was undeniable.
Less really did work better. The proof was in the pictures, the
proof was in the stats, the proof was in the faces of all my happy
clients! Not only was this system efficient and effective, it was
LIVABLE… the one thing I had set out to do all those years ago had
finally come true. And, that is how my LivingFit Online program was born!
Then came the biggest surprise of all!
About a year after testing and refining my program, I
fell upon a popular online transformation site one day and began
offering some courtesy coaching as a way to give back to the community
for all the great things that fitness had brought to my life.
It became
something of a fun hobby until it became clear that many folks wanted a
more formal, 1-on-1 style of training. Requests started rolling in for
an online version of my program...so I began with a small group of men
and women I refer to as my Dream Team to pilot a system that would allow
